Inside the Sale: The Story Behind One of the Most Expensive Watches WOLVYN Has Sold

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15412BC

When a client approached WOLVYN Luxury Timepieces to help them find a truly special watch, it sent us down a rabbit hole to discover one of the most exquisite pieces by Swiss luxury watch manufacturer Audemars Piguet: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15412BC.

How the Story Begins

When our client first reached out, they weren’t looking for the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15412BC. They were looking for another model with diamonds set toward the inside of the watch. That initial request sent us down several research paths as we began comparing different rare Audemars Piguet variations. While we were looking for one particular type of design, we quickly discovered a range of limited and unusual Royal Oak models.

Along the way, we found an interesting group of watches a collector designed for himself and his friends. They were produced in three gemstone combinations: red rubies, green emeralds, and blue sapphires. With five pieces in each color, the collection totaled 15 watches across the three versions.

Other variations caught our eye, including an Audemars Piguet piece covered in diamonds, another with a hammered finish, and another with a frosted finish. In particular, the client didn’t like the frosted finish.

Then, we found it: the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked Ref. 15412BC.SS.1220BC.02, a Japan-exclusive edition limited to just eight pieces.

At first, it was just another rare variation for us to consider and show to the client. But the more we looked, the more one detail stood out, making us wonder if it could be ‘the one’.

A blue balance bridge.

The Deciding Detail: The Blue Balance Bridge

Compared to some of the other watches we had looked at, Ref. 15412BC was far simpler in design, and that became part of its appeal. What truly set it apart from the other watches we explored was the blue balance bridge. Among all the limited and rare versions we encountered, this was the only timepiece featuring a blue balance bridge. Ultimately, this became a major reason for choosing this particular piece.

Alongside giving the watch its own character, the blue balance bridge also highlighted the patented double balance wheel mechanism with twin hairsprings, as well as the baguette-cut blue sapphire bezel and hour markers.

For a search that started with a very different model, we had arrived at something entirely unexpected that stood apart from many other rare Royal Oak models we’d considered.

Discovering Audemars Piguet: Ref. 15412BC Sapphire Japan AP

Officially known as the Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked Ref. 15412BC.SS.1220BC.02, it combines the classic features of the Royal Oak with the openworked design and double balance wheel technology of Audemars Piguet.

The 18-carat white gold case, 41mm in diameter and 10.1mm thick, stands out for its class, but the white gold bezel set with 32 baguette-cut sapphires totaling approximately 3.19 carats quickly becomes the star of the show.

However, the blue balance bridge is undoubtedly the most distinctive visual detail. It’s visible through the openworked dial and adds a striking blue accent to the movement. It also cleverly ties the technical side of the watch to the gemstone setting. This feature, more than anything else, distinguished Ref. 15412BC from the other rare variations we discovered.

What Makes the Double Balance Wheel Special?

The story of Ref. 15412BC also connects to one of the most recognizable innovations by Audemars Piguet: the double balance wheel.

The Royal Oak began with Gérald Genta’s iconic design, introduced with its octagonal bezel, exposed screws, architectural case, and integrated bracelet. Ref. 15412BC maintains all the fundamentals of the original Royal Oak, but with an exciting new technical aesthetic through its openworked construction.

The movement inside is Caliber 3132, an in-house automatic mechanical movement with AP’s patented double balance wheel architecture. Rather than using the more conventional single balance assembly, AP designed a patented system with two balance wheels and hairsprings working together to improve stability and performance. The visual appeal was just a bonus.

In Ref. 15412BC, that technical construction became part of the watch’s visual identity. You can see the movement underneath the openworked dial, with the blue balance bridge providing the detail that first caught our attention during our research.

A Closer Look at Ref. 15412BC Sapphire Japan AP

The details of this watch show just how much went into this limited edition.

The Case

The 41mm case is crafted from 18-carat white gold and measures 10.1mm thick. It features an 18-carat white gold bezel set with baguette-cut blue sapphires.

A glare-proofed sapphire crystal and caseback provide views into the watch, while a screw-locked crown completes the case. This watch is water-resistant to 50m.

The Dial

The dial was particularly noteworthy to our client and us. An openworked rhodium-toned dial is accented by a striking blue balance wheel bridge, baguette-cut sapphire hour markers, and blue Royal Oak hands enhanced with a luminescent coating.

The Bracelet

Simple in design, the bracelet blends seamlessly with the watch’s dial and case. It’s an 18-carat white gold bracelet with an Audemars Piguet folding clasp. The clasp is a secure butterfly-style deployant buckle designed to keep the watch securely on your wrist.

The Setting

The Audemars Piguet Ref. 15412BC Sapphire Japan AP is adorned with 32 baguette-cut sapphires totaling approximately 3.19 carats on the bezel, complemented by 11 baguette-cut sapphires totaling around 0.17 carats, marking the hours. Together, these sapphires create a refined and continuous touch of color and brilliance across the entire watch.

The Caliber

This AP timepiece features Caliber 3132, an in-house automatic mechanical movement with a patented double balance wheel architecture for precision and stability.

From the Initial Search to Our Exciting Discovery

What makes this sale particularly interesting is that the watch we ultimately secured for our client wasn’t actually the watch that started our conversations with them. The original request simply led us to explore a range of rare Audemars Piguet timepieces. We found watches in exceptionally limited quantities, gemstone-set editions, diamond-covered variations, and pieces with frosted and hammered finishes, synonymous with the AP name.

We ruled out some of these options based on the client’s preferences. Others were simply a different interpretation of the Royal Oak. Then we found Ref. 15412BC.

With just eight pieces produced for the Japan market, it was already an exceptionally rare match. But rarity alone didn’t make it stand out from the crowd. Its design was actually simpler than some of the other timepieces we found.

However, the blue balance bridge gave it a distinctive character we hadn’t seen anywhere else. That combination ultimately led us to decide this was what our client was looking for, and we secured it for them. Today, it remains one of the most distinctive and limited Audemars Piguet watches WOLVYN has had the pleasure of sourcing.
