Why Richard Mille Represents the Future of Watchmaking: Innovation Meets Artistry

Described as a racing machine on the wrist, Richard Mille is a Swiss luxury watch company based in Les Breuleux, Switzerland. Watch connoisseurs around the world favor Richard Mille luxury watches for their quality materials, workmanship, and associations and sponsorships with various sportspeople and events like the Le Mans Classic and Grand Prix de Pau.
While several watchmaking brands and companies exist, there are many standout reasons why Richard Mille represents the future of watchmaking:
Advanced Materials
Most watches are made of stainless steel, which is a popular choice for both the casing and the bracelet. However, Richard Mille watches are at the cutting edge of innovation with advanced materials rarely used on any other watches.
Many Richard Mille watches are made with grade 5 titanium, a titanium alloy renowned for corrosion resistance, strength, and low density. This material is commonly used in aerospace, the automotive and marine industries, medical equipment, and sporting goods. While many watch brands use titanium, they are typically not grade 5.
Silicon Nitride Si3N4, which has been used in NASA shuttles, also features in a Richard Mille model. This light and strong ceramic material was used in the RM 011 Automatic Flyback Chronograph Felipe Massa of 2007.
Richard Mille has continued to buck the trend of ‘normal’ watchmaking materials, with other innovative, strong, and lightweight materials like nanotube carbon polymer, ceramic, and cermet. You won’t find any Richard Mille watches that aren’t leading the way with some of the most superior watchmaking materials available.
Technologies
As if Richard Mille wasn’t already pushing the boundaries by using materials typically found in spacecraft, they also take watchmaking to new heights with a raft of incredible technologies.
For example, Richard Mille worked with North Thin Ply Technology, a company renowned for producing lightweight materials used in sailing and Formula 1, to create watches using Carbon NTPT and Quartz TPT.
As a trendsetter, not a follower, you will also find Richard Mille’s name linked to many ‘firsts’ in watchmaking. This luxury watch company developed the first baseplates featuring carbon nanofibers, Carbon TPT, and titanium. They also developed gem-set ceramic and invented the laminated sapphire crystal material with the development of the RM 53-01 model.
In fact, Richard Mille is synonymous with many inventions in watchmaking, like the mechanical G-force sensor, a declutchable rotor, a variable-geometry rotor, and its own manufactured automatic calibres.
Breaking Records
Not a company to stick within the limits of traditional watchmaking, Richard Mille watches have broken several records. In 2012, the RM 031 was launched as the most regular mechanical watch in the world. Beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, it was accurate to within 30 seconds a month. Just 10 of these watches were produced.
Richard Mille has also broken records for lightweight watches. In 2005, the company launched the RM 006 watch model, which weighed just 48 grams, excluding the strap. In 2013, the manually-wound RM 27-01 was launched, weighing just 18.83 grams, including the strap. This Rafael Nadal Tourbillon watch was the lightest Tourbillon ever made.
Endorsements and Sponsorships
Richard Mille doesn’t just produce everyday watches. They regularly associate with brands, events, and even sportspeople to create some truly special watches.
For example, Richard Mille collaborated with Airbus Corporate Jets to produce the RM-50-02 ACJ Jourbillon Split Seconds Chronograph. Just 30 were made. They also partnered with the Italian yacht manufacturer, Perini Navi, to make the RM 014 Tourbillon Perini Navi and RM 015 Tourbillon Perini Navi watches. Richard Mille even became the official timekeeper of the Perini Navi Cup.
