Whether you’re a serious Rolex collector or a casual enthusiast, you can’t help but be intrigued by the details surrounding your timepieces. You may wonder how old they are, what models they are, what they are made of, and even the countries they were sold in.
Depending on where you purchased your watches and how old they are, this information can be hard to come by. However, it may be easier than you think, thanks to Rolex serial numbers.
In this helpful guide, you can learn where you can find a Rolex serial number, what the series of numbers means, and why the serial number on a Rolex is so important to know.
Where to Find Your Rolex Serial Number
The location of the serial number on your Rolex watch depends on its age. If your model was produced before 2005, it will be between the lugs, near 6 o’clock. Remove the bracelet to view it.
If your Rolex was produced after 2005, you’ll find its serial number on the inner ring/metal wall between the watch dial and the crystal, near 6 o’clock. This area, known as the rehaut, is visible without removing the bracelet.
For Rolex owners who are worried about removing the bracelet or if the serial number isn’t legible, there’s a second option for identifying it. The serial number is usually found with the certificate of authenticity or the original documents that came with the watch upon purchase.

To find out the year your Rolex was produced, compare your 4-8-digit serial number in the table below:

Understand Your Rolex Model Number
Alongside the serial number etched on your Rolex, you can also find a model number consisting of 4-6 digits engraved on the side of the case, above the 12 o’clock position, between the lugs. This number, broken into three sets, determines the Rolex type, material, and bezel.
For example, let’s look at the Rolex Submariner 16610:
- The first three numbers ‘166’ refer to the model: Yachtmaster or Submariner
- The ‘1’ is the material: yellow gold filled
- The final digit ‘0’ indicates a polished bezel
Rolex Models:
Rolex offers multiple watch models named by their purpose, design, and functionality. For example, the Submariner is built for diving, while the Daytona is built for racing.
| Rolex Model | First 2-3 Digits of the Model Number |
| Submariner (no date) | 55, 140 |
| Submariner | 16, 166, 168 |
| Sea Dweller | 16, 166 |
| GMT Master | 16, 65, 167 |
| GMT Master II | 167, 1167 |
| Day-Date ‘Rolex President’ | 65, 66, 18, 180, 182, 183 |
| Datejust | 16, 162 |
| Daytona (Manual Wind) | 62 |

Rolex Materials
All Rolex models, regardless of when they were made, are crafted from high-grade materials. In fact, Rolex is known for being at the cutting edge of durable and specialized materials. They are identifiable by the second-to-last number of the model number.
| Material | Number |
| Stainless | 0 |
| Yellow gold-filled | 1 |
| White gold-filled | 2 |
| Stainless and yellow gold | 3 |
| Stainless with 18k white gold | 4 |
| Gold shell | 5 |
| Platinum | 6 |
| 14k yellow gold | 7 |
| 18k yellow gold | 8 |
Rolex Bezel
The Rolex bezel is the outer ring that surrounds the watch crystal. The original design is fluted and screws onto the case for waterproofing, but several other options have since emerged. Your model’s bezel type is identifiable by the final digit of your Rolex’s model number.
| Material | Number |
| Polished | 0 |
| Engine-turned | 1 |
| Engine-turned | 2 |
| Fluted | 3 |
| Handcrafted | 4 |
| Pyramid | 5 |
| Rotating bezel | 6 |
Rolex Clasp Codes
There are more numbers on the average Rolex watch than you think. On the inside of a Rolex watch’s clasp near the hinge is a series of letters and numbers that indicate when a Rolex clasp was produced. Rolex clasp codes consist of 1-2 letters and a number; the letters indicate the production year, and the number corresponds to the month.
Clasp codes are important because they can be an extra way to confirm a Rolex watch’s authenticity. Understanding how to interpret clasp codes also helps ensure the bracelet is genuine and correctly aligns with the watch case’s production.
Additionally, they can help you confirm a Rolex’s originality. If a clasp code doesn’t match the watch, it can mean the bracelet was replaced at some point. A Rolex with a matching clasp code is generally worth more to collectors.

Rolex Watch Country Codes
If your Rolex has a Rolex Guarantee Certificate, you will find a three-digit code in the top left corner. This code indicates the country in which this Rolex was sold. However, most watches manufactured before 1980 won’t have one, nor will many produced in the United States. Rolex also stopped using country codes altogether around 2020.
